Another tough game, another win! Since our 12-1 opening day win over Oceana, it seems like every game has been a dogfight. And our boys have fought hard and come up big every time! We have to keep in mind that we are a U10 team playing "up" in U11, division 1. Each week we are putting 10 4th graders on the field and facing off against a team full of 5th graders. Looking at the Seekonk roster we see that the majority of their players were born in the fall of 2004 with a handful born in spring 2005. So it gives you a good idea at how incredible it has been for our boys to go unbeaten through the first 5 weeks of the season playing boys that our bigger, faster, and more experienced soccer players in many cases. The President of Mariner Soccer, Walter Bairdi, has been impressed with our boys and on Saturday afternoon told me that "You are having an incredible season! Keep it up!!". The coaches are very proud of our players. They play hard and never quit. For the most part we have played with good sportsmanship and our players are playing their positions properly and passing the ball the way we want them to.
This week we faced a very big and fast Seekonk team. Remy got us going with a blast from outside the box. We have been moving him into the left midfielder position earlier and more often and it has been paying off big time. George picked up a pair of goals including a fantastic play from a Bowman corner kick. He stopped a very difficult ball and in the same motion finished with a strong strike.
Johnny Bowman's corner kicks are becoming legendary. Every time we line up for a corner kick we have a chance at scoring. And it all starts with Johnny! The George and Marmelo show continued this week. They seem to hook up for a clutch bang-bang goal each week right when we need it most. Watch the video below as George draws in 3 defenders and it's a quick pass and a strong strike! Nice work!
Another Bowman rocket launched corner kick almost resulted in a highlight film goal for Anthony. He "heel kicked" a very tough ball that was deep in the box and it hit the post! Watch the video and watch him adjust to the ball in the air by running AWAY from the goal and somehow timed it perfectly to get a strong heel kick towards the goal.
John Butler played another good game on defense and played very well at striker . He had a nice turnaround blast that you can watch below. Nice work John! Vincent played strong at midfield and defense. Vincent plays the game the right way. Aggressive, smart, and never gives up on a 50-50 ball. His strong play defensively helps us move Remy up on offense occasionally which has been a huge help for us in the last few games. Christian played well when he was in there but wasn't feeling well. Ryan had his usually solid day in goal. One goal was a fluke because our defense stopped when they thought the whistle blew. Tres did a great job and has established himself as a defender that will not give our opponents the opportunity to get an easy shot at our goalkeeper. He is also always in the right position!
