When we put this team together last fall after tryouts we knew we had a special group of talented boys. But we were a bit worried about putting a U10 team of 9 and 10 year olds into U11 division 1. We thought we would get some great experience and hopefully finish .500 or better and maybe sneak into a playoff spot. With 1 game remaining... your boys are undefeated at 5 wins, 2 draws, and 0 losses!!! I can't say we are surprised because through winter and most of spring this team has never lost a game. But what they have achieved already still makes my head spin. Win lose or draw the rest of the way this has been an incredibly successful season. And the coaches could not be more proud of our little guys! When the other coach saw our team he said "wow they are small...we won't be intimidated or have a hard time today"! We may be small, but we pack a serious punch!!!
If we can upset 2nd place Fall River this Thursday we will be the #2 seed in the post season and we will get a first round bye. We got a great effort on Saturday by all of our players. In the early going things looked a little rough when Remy went down hard and had to come out of the game. We were all so happy to see him return. He is one tough kid! Then Anthony had a great second effort goal but was called for offsides. Blow the whistle ref! What took you so long?
The boys took to Danny's coaching on Thursday and were crossing the ball and making good passes all day long. Anthony had his best game of the season with a pair of goals and was a threat in the box all day long. His goal on another sensational Johnny Bowman free kick was nice and if you watch the video you will see he and Remy break on the ball perfectly just like we practiced. Nice 2nd effort Anthony! Never give up on the ball when you are in the box and good things usually happen.
George was our playmaker and had 4 assists and was crossing and making great passes all game. Having Remy and George on the wings beating the defense to the corners and crossing the ball to the middle is going to be a huge advantage for us against Fall River and into the playoffs.
Johnny Bowman got a nice goal on a free kick and Remy and Marmelo each had a goal. Defensively we played another solid game led by Bowman and Christian. Christian was a jack of all trades and played striker, defense, and midfield. John Butler played great again watch his video below where he fights off the attacking player and moves the ball back upfield. Tres came in and played very well too. We will need to play great defense if we want to go deep into the playoffs. Ryan didn't get as much action as in previous games but when he was tested he came up with some nice saves. Vincent is so good at midfield dominating on 50/50 balls and has a knack for timing the ball perfectly and getting off a good boot! This week he split time on defense and midfield and played great at both.
Coach Geerdes and Coach Marmelo kept the defense pushed up to force offsides and Coach Marmelo probably had his best game of the year keeping our guys moving and in the right position. You could tell he was pumped for this game and got the boys to come out flying right from the start! Great job coaches!
